Historical Note

The Florida Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ) was founded in Palm Beach in 1935. Following a name change in the national organization, the group became known as the Greater Miami Region National Conference for Community and Justice in the 1990s. In 2005, the Greater Miami Region of the National Conference for Community and Justice regrouped as the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews following the decentralization of the National Conference for Community and Justice.

The national organization was established in 1927 to promote religious, racial and ethnic inclusiveness in American society. The Florida Region was headquartered in Miami and among its earliest missions was spearheading the effort to thwart the reemergence of the Ku Klux Klan following World War II. Programs would later reflect societal changes as the organization worked to end racism and intolerance in areas such as the arts, religion and sexual preferences. Locally, they focused on the challenges facing Miami’s growing immigrant and refugee population and the continuing economic and social problems that plagued the African American community.

1928 National Conference of Protestants, Catholics, and Jews formed in New York.
1935 Florida Region founded in Palm Beach.
1951 The National Conference of Christians and Jews, Florida Region was the organization to present a program in Dade County high school auditorium before a non-segregated audience.
1951 NCCJ sponsors the first interracial dinner in Miami at the University of Miami.
1960s NCCJ works in the community towards desegregation of the school system and civil rights.
1980 Following the McDuffie riots, the Conference works to heal the community and alleviate racial and economic tensions through a series of community hearings.
1990s The National Conference of Catholics and Jews changed their name to the National Conference for Community and Justice. The Greater Miami Region remained active in their fight for equality and tolerance.
2005 The Greater Miami Region of the National Conference for Community and Justice regroups as the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews following the decentralization of the NCCJ.
