Historical Note
The photographers of most or all of the photographs, Engle y Lund, worked in Havana.
After the War of 1898, the U.S. occupied Cuba for almost four years. During that time, the Cuban army dissolved. The U.S. military fed the famished, helped rebuild the island's infrastructure, introduced educational reforms, and eradicated yellow fever. In 1902, the formal occupation of the island ended, and the Cuban Republic was born.
