Biographical Note
The Gilpins lived in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Most winters, they took extended pleasure trips to Florida, where they stayed in small hotels or on board chartered sailing yachts. Yachts they chartered included the Seminole (built by A. W. Dimick, Palm Beach) and the Wabun (built by Ralph Munroe, Coconut Grove).
Husband John Robinson Gilpin was a commodities broker. Most of his letters are written to his sister, Susan Gilpin Hazard. Wife Emma (b. 1846?) kept diaries of their trips. In later years as an adult, their son Vincent (b. 1874?) wrote several nautically-themed books, including co-authoring The Commodore’s Story with Ralph Munroe.
Scope and Contents
Letters and diaries written by the Gilpins while on winter trips to the east and west coasts of Florida. John R. Gilpin (JRG) wrote most of the letters, and his wife Emma (EEG) wrote most of the diaries. Their son Vincent (VG) wrote a few letters and diaries.
