Biographical Note

Charlton W. Tebeau was a noted Florida historian and teacher of history. For many years he served as chairman of the department of history at the University of Miami. He was a founding member of the Historical Association of Southern Florida, editor of its journal, Tequesta, and author of numerous books.

Scope and Content

The papers contain notes, correspondence and speeches by Dr. Tebeau, and many typescripts and photocopies on Florida topics, including primary sources (diaries, memoirs, etc.) and secondary sources (articles by students of his history classes and fellow historians). Most, but not all, relate to the Everglades or the Depression of the 1930s. Some documents related to the 1972 Master's Hearing on the dispute over federal vs. state control of Florida Bay, for which Dr. Tebeau acted as an expert witness.
