Biographical Note
Attorney and publisher of the Miami Herald (1910-1937).
Knight "immediately liked Shutts, a small town Indiana lawyer who, coming to Miami at forty, had grown with the frontier town and now, at sixty-six, looked upon himself as an important and influential citizen—publisher, lawyer, businessman, civic leader. Shutts had an earthy Mid-western manner that Knight understood. Nor was Knight offended by the older man’s emphasis on his own achievements. The walls of Shutts’ office were adorned by scores of autographed photographs of important national figures, including presidents and cabinet members. A number of the faces Knight recognized.” -- Knights of the Fourth Estate, p. 12.
