Tropical Explorers
Summer Camp
Begins June 6 to August 15, 2008
9 am–5 pm
(early drop-off 8:30 am and late pick-up 5:30 pm, curbside drop-off available on West Flagler Street, directly across from the Museum Tower building)
Tropical Explorers Summer Camp is a unique program designed
to engage campers, ages 6 to 12, in thematic programs and activities that allow them to learn while having fun. For ten weeks campers are given the opportunity to be creative, explore new worlds, develop new interests and make new friends.
Tropical Explorers Summer Camp features:
- Ten weeks loaded with exciting adventures, packed with
fun and education.
- Highly skilled professional educators and counselors.
- Different themes each week.
- Indoor and outdoor hands-on activities, including gallery
games, music, arts & crafts, drama, field trips to historic
sites and many more exciting summertime experiences.
- Fee includes one T-shirt, snacks and field trips. Campers must
bring their own lunch.
- This year’s field trips include such exciting locations as Miami
Metrozoo, Lowe Art Museum, Bill Graham Farm Village and
Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens.
- Tropical Explorers Camp is from 9 am to 5 pm. Campers can be
dropped off as early as 8:30 am and must be picked up no later
than 5:30 pm. Curbside drop-off is available between 8:30 and
9:00 am, and pick-up between 5:00 and 5:30 pm on West
Flagler Street, directly across from the Museum Tower building.
No need to park. Museum Educators will be waiting on the north
side of the road.

Many Faces of Miami
June 9–June 13
See the beauty of the tropical scenery and multicultural diversity that makes our community so dynamic. Participate in a Map Program about the different people and customs that add to the excitement of living in Miami. Build your own mini-replica of the Magic City.
Native American Nations
June 16–June 20
Witness the wonders and majesty of America’s first arrivals. Acquaint yourselves with local Indians while making your own wooden Calusa artifacts. Hear traditional music, create your own patchwork designs, and construct Native American instruments.
Weather and Climate Essentials
June 23–June 27
Find out why weather and climate define all aspects of life in South Florida and abroad. Create your own colorful, accurate world climate maps. Learn how to be a meteorologist and forecast weather. Create your own amazing Hurricane in a Bottle.
America Coast to Coast
June 30–July 4
From vast and magnificent Alaska to the coral-filled waters of the Florida Keys, America is a land of wonderment. Familiarize yourself with each of our nation’s regions through folk music, crafts, and
historical re-enactments. Learn about the birth of our nation and the visionaries that made it happen while designing revolution-era flags.
Caribbean Contacts
July 7–July 11
The Caribbean, with its thrilling history, outstanding nature, and intriguing cultures, is one of the world’s most renowned places. Make authentic Haitian artwork out of tin and acrylic paints. Build spectacular clay models of Cuban birdlife. Live the life of swashbuckling privateers and pirates in a film about Captain Morgan.
The South Florida Wilderness
July 14–July 18
Experience the remarkable wildlife and rich natural heritage that characterize South Florida. Meet environmentalists, past and present, who have dedicated their lives to the preservation of nature. Build colorful collages of Everglades scenery and animals.

Miami Beach Memoirs
July 21–July 25
See what draws millions to the land of sun and fun. Visit, with an experienced guide, the pastel-hued neighborhood of South Beach. Take snapshots of the fabulous scenery with cameras and make free-standing art deco hotels. All students will be provided with their own cameras!
Journey through Latin America
July 28–August 1
Grab your passports for a trip to meet our southern neighbors. Explore the Americas on an interactive classroom-sized map, filled with authentic regional artifacts. Hear music, try on costumes, and make beautiful artwork representing this diverse, colorful part of the world.
Old-Time Florida
August 4–August 8
Go back in time to an age when Florida was a quiet, secluded and faraway place. Sing and write your own songs about the sunshine state. Sketch a portfolio of early Florida in the style of John James Audubon, the famous naturalist who visited in the early 1800s.
Participate in a movie about the lonely, rough life of Florida pioneers.
Seven Seas Explorers
August 11–August 15
Discover different civilizations and traditions around the world. Design your own seaworthy sailing ship. Make gold, silver and
gem-filled models of ancient Egyptian jewelry. Learn the ways of mariners, archaeologists and other explorers who bravely traveled the vast corners of the globe.
