Standing Watch Over the River of Grass
by Patricia Mary Hunt Lue

Paper foundation, machine piecing and hand appliqué

"So much of Florida's history has occurred under conditions of extreme stress," says Ms. Lue, who chose to create a quilt square capturing what she loves of Miami. "One of my favorite things is the sight of the palms dotted along the Everglades portion of Tamiami Trail," says the quilter. Her work is a tribute to Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and "when I was working on it, I smiled and said, 'all right!'"
