The Biltmore
by Lauren T. Mehalik

Photo transfer, ink embellishing, silk flowers, beading, embroidery, hand and machine appliqué

Built by George Merrick in 1926, The Biltmore Hotel stands as a proud beacon in Coral Gables. Over the years, it has been a luxury hotel and a veteran's hospital. It has also been sold, abandoned and slated for demolition. Ms. Mehalik notes the Biltmore's tower is modeled after the Giralda Bell Tower of the Cathedral of Seville. "The Biltmore Hotel reminds me of these special vacations in Europe I have shared with my family," she says, "and I always feel good seeing it upon my return to Coral Gables, knowing I will be home soon."
