quilt block

Andrew
by Maya Schoenenberger Boeglin

Crazy quilt, strip piecing, appliqué

Ms. Boeglin and her family moved to Miami in the fall of 1995 and visited Biscayne National Park and the Everglades. "I saw the remnants of the damage Hurricane Andrew did to this area and I was appalled. Some places look completely different and much sadder now." Her block combines fallen growth and new vegetation. "Dead large trees together with the newly grown smaller trees and bushes, demonstrating nature's opposites, destructive and regenerative forces."
