Alice
Brickell
by Joan Futscher
Piecing, embroidery, printing, photo transfer
One of Miamis earliest pioneers, Alice Brickell, taught at the
Lemon City schoolhouse from 1889-1890 and homesteaded nearby. She also
taught Sunday School to the Micosukee Indians and ran the early post office.
Ms. Futscher, a quilt enthusiast, was enchanted by the many stories
of the Brickell family. They seemed so close and accepting of the local
people, wanting to serve them as well as develop their own interests.
Alice was not afraid to take on large projects, and she seemed to execute
them with ease.
