Jean Baptiste Labat, 1663-1738. Dominican missionary Labat lived in the West Indies from 1693 to 1706. This print is from a book he wrote about the islands, particularly Martinique and Guadeloupe. Kalinago (Carib) Indians migrated from South America into the Windward Islands beginning about 1400. They resisted the Europeans, and eventually retreated to the more mountainous parts of St. Vincent and Dominica, where they inter-married with Africans who escaped slavery. In 1796 the British deported the St. Vincent Kalinago (about 5,000) to the island of Roatan off Honduras. From there, they moved into present-day Belize, where their descendants, known as "Garifuna," live today. Image no. 2004-263-1 |
