How can I become part of Teen Miami?
Teenagers interested in becoming a part of the Teen Miami project must complete an application and turn it in to the Historical Museum by April 15, 2010. After all the applications have been reviewed, potential teen participants will be called in for an in-person interview at the museum.
The final selected participants will be notified of their acceptance by June 10, 2010.
Will I get paid for being part of Teen Miami?
Yes. After the initial summer orientation, teen participants will be given paid internships with the museum.
If I become part of Teen Miami, what will I be doing?
Summer of 2010
Teen participants will be given an orientation and training in the multi-faceted components of museum work from historical research to developing an exhibition, educational programs and a marketing plan. Teens will also explore the history of teen culture in the United States and Miami in particular.
August 2010 to March 2011
Teen participants will receive real-life work experience by interning in the museum’s Exhibitions, Education and External Relations departments.
April 2011 to July of 2011
The teen participants will document teen life in Miami-Dade County by conducting an oral history project. Teen teams will interview people from different generations about what it was like to be a teenager in Miami. The content of these oral histories will be used to help frame the Teen Miami exhibition.
August 2011 to August 2012
Teen participants will work on all the various components of the Teen Miami exhibition from developing the programs that will accompany it, to creating an audio tour and helping with the design and artifact selection for the exhibition. The Teen Miami exhibition is set to open in September of 2012.
September 2012 to February 2013
Teen participants will be working directly with the exhibition on display by staffing the Teen Miami exhibition programs, leading tours of the exhibition, and working with HMSF to evaluate the success of the exhibition and the project.
Can I get credit for community service through Teen Miami?
Teen participants cannot receive community service for Teen Miami since they will be paid for their participation. Teen participants can, however, volunteer extra hours at the museum to fulfill their community service hours. There are many other volunteer opportunities available at the museum.
What kind of teenagers is the museum looking for?
The museum is interested in bright, motivated and creative teenagers who are interested in history and culture, who can absolutely commit the time needed to complete the project and who can bring their unique talents to Teen Miami.
Is there an age or grade requirement for participating in Teen Miami?
All applicants to Teen Miami must be teenagers and MUST be entering their freshmen or sophomore year of high school in August of 2010.
What is the deadline for applying?
The application postmark deadline is April 15, 2010. Applications may also be hand-delivered to the Historical Museum by April 15, 2010.
When will I know if I’ve been accepted or not?
Potential participants will be contacted for an in-person interview in May of 2010. Final selected teen interns will be notified June of 2010.
Do I have to get parental approval?
Yes. Parents must sign the parental consent form included in the application.
Where does the program take place?
The Teen Miami project will take place at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida in downtown Miami. HMSF is located at 101 West Flagler Street, across from Government Center Metrorail station. Directions to the museum.
What is the time commitment?
Teen Miami is a three year project. Selected teen participants must
commit five weeks of their time during the summers of 2010, 2011 and 2012 and eight hours a month during the 2010, 2011 and 2012 school year.
Three years is a long time. What if I can’t commit that much time?
Teens selected to participate in this project must be willing and able to commit to the full three years.
