ENDANGERED SPECIES

print

Collectors removed so many palms, orchids, and Liguus tree snails that they became endangered or extinct. Some collectors would burn a hammock after gathering all the Liguus or orchids, to ensure that their collections contained the only varieties that exist. This practice is now illegal.

Plate from “The Florida Tree Snails of the Genus Liguus,” by Charles Torrey Simpson. Proceedings of the United States National Museum, v. 73, no. 20 (1929).
