Illustrating Cuba's Flora and Fauna

Juan Lembeye Lartaud

Lembeye drew thirty-eight birds in total. However, the majority were copied from the royal octavo plates of John James Audubon. In several cases, he also copied background flora from Audubon’s illustrations and incorporated them into his own plates.

While Lembeye observed these birds in Cuba, he “borrowed” the illustrations of them from Audubon. As a result, the respected Espasa encyclopedia has said that Lembeye's work is “entertaining” but “of limited scientific value.”
