Florida Cowboys
February 25, 2000 to August 20, 2000

The romance and traditions of the cowboys of the American West are a distinctive and beloved part of American culture. Florida Cowboys showcases more than 100 black-and-white photographs by photographer Jon Kral that depict the gritty life of a cowboy. Cracker, a short film by Dennis Copeland, will be shown in conjunction with the exhibit, providing visitors with insight into Kral’s subjects and their passion for ranching.

Through the use of contemporary images, this exhibition explores how Florida shares in the romance and traditions of the cowboys of the American West. To provide further insight into the Florida cowboy culture, the Historical Museum incorporates historic images and artifacts such as whips and saddles.

Through Kral’s contemporary photographs, Florida Cowboys documents the lifestyle and traditions of Florida’s long and colorful ranching history. These photographs are featured in Kral’s book, Cracker: Florida’s Enduring Cowboys.

Following its presentation at the Historical Museum, Florida Cowboys will travel to other Florida museums, including the Museum of Florida History, Orange County Historical Museum and the Tampa Bay History Center.

Organized by the Historical Museum of Southern Florida.

Sponsored in part by McArthur Farms.
