National History Day Competition
County Competition
National History Day is a multi-level competition for students in grades 6 through 12. The Historical Museum will organize the 2007 Miami-Dade County competition. This contest provides students an opportunity to develop their research and critical thinking skills, while gaining a better understanding of history. Students investigate a topic related to an annual theme and produce a historical paper, documentary, exhibit or performance to present their research. The different categories, along with the option of group or individual projects, provide an opportunity for students to compete based on their individual interests and strengths.
The theme for 2007 is Triumph and Tragedy in History.
Winners in each category at the county-level competition advance to the Florida History Fair in Tallahassee where winners are selected to participate in the national competition held in College Park, MD (minutes from Washington, D.C.). Students typically begin their research in the fall to prepare for the county-level competition in the spring.
Teachers interested in preparing their students for National History Day projects should contact the Historical Museum early in the school year. We invite teachers to attend a History Day
orientation on Wednesday, October 4, 2006, after school to receive curriculum and contest materials. Light refreshments will also be served. Reserve your space early by calling 305.375.1492. Resources and materials will be provided to assist you and your students.
The county competition will be held on Friday, March 23, 2007.
