Come and discover the rich history of 10,000 years of South Florida with your students as you are guided through the museum’s permanent exhibition, Tropical Dreams: A People’s History of South Florida.

Seminole/Miccosukee Discovery*
Experience the fascinating world of the Seminole and Miccosukee Indians. Students will discover the lifestyles, customs and beliefs of South Florida’s Native Americans.

- reenact a traditional cooking fire

Follow the wake of great explorers. Students will cross the world’s oceans on a giant floor map and retrace the routes followed by early European traders, Spanish conquistadors and others.
Students will:
- identify changes in navigational tools and techniques over time
- explore the relationship between science and history
- learn about European exploration of the “New World” while gaining geographic understanding

History Mysteries (targeting grade 4)
History Mysteries addresses the social studies curriculum objectives through four different programs that examine important themes in Florida history. Students will engage in role-playing and hands-on experiences with artifacts. In addition to incorporating standards that address the content strands tested on the FCAT, History Mysteries also serves Florida Statue 233.061, which mandates a Florida history experience for Grade 4 students.
Making a Living in Florida
Explore the ways various groups have earned a living in South Florida: Seminoles in the Everglades, Key West settlers and Miami homesteaders.
Florida Lifestyle
Examine the lifestyles of prehistoric Miamians, Seminole Indians and South Florida homesteaders.
Florida Under Five Flags
Learn about the various nations that have controlled the state throughout its history and the reasons different groups had for migrating to Florida.
Transportation in Florida
Investigate the impact of transportation on South Florida history and Miami’s position as a “gateway” city.

Archaeology: Dig History!
Uncover the past during this two-part program. First, students will learn about the discovery of the Miami Circle at the museum. Then students will go to a dig site!
Program includes:
- examination of artifacts found at the site
- tour of the museum’s pre-historic gallery, First Arrivals
- an actual excavation to discover artifacts, using fundamental archaeological methods and tools
$285 for a 2 hour program for 20 students

Passages Map
Trace the various passages made by Africans. Students will explore the rich culture of West Africa, particularly the great kingdom of Mali, and re-enact the fourteenth century pilgrimage of Mansa Musa on a floor-sized map.
Students will:
- Learn about the Middle Passage and the forced migration of West Africans to the “New World”
- See artifacts from a slave ship and learn about resistance to slavery
- Discuss the civil rights movement and the role of African Americans in South Florida history
